Energetic, striking, and precise… Kathak is one of the eight ancient classical dance forms of India. Originated from North India, Kathak has a prominent place among all the ancient classical dance forms of India.
Kathak derives it’s name from Sanskrit word “Katha” means “story”. In ancient India “Kathikas”(storytellers) recited verses from the great religious and mythological tales using music and explanatory gestures. The “Kathikas” were “Devdasis”, and their stories and dances formed part of the daily rituals of worship. Kathak has evolved with political and cultural changes of India.
The technical aspects of Kathak consist of intensive footwork, free hand movements and Chakkers(spins). Kathak expressions are very introverted, withdrawn, dramatic and highly stylized. Fast rhythmic footwork set to improvisation of complex rhythms and syllables of Tabla or Pakhawaj and the clarity of fast pirouettes makes Kathak very interesting and captivating.
